23 Jun Get a personal brand!

A few years ago a friend of mine during an informal business lunch asked me straight out: “Ale, what is YOUR brand?”, I looked at her with amusement, I had never heard of such a concept and clearly could not answer the question as concisely and precisely as I would have hoped to. I studied marketing and building brands is what I do for a living, but when it came to MY brand I was lost for words. I spent the next weeks trying to answer that question. This gave me clarity on who I am, my values and strengths. We all have many brands depending on the job you are applying for, you may have a personal and a professional brand: your core values and strengths will be the common denominator, the words you choose to express them will adapt to the audience you are pitching your brand to. So how do you go about finding your core strengths and building your brand?

Try this exercise:

1) List the top 5 people that your admire, then try to pin point why.

You will likely share values and aspirations of the people you admire.

2) List your top 10 goals in life. Now try to find a common theme

You should try to get to a top 3 list, these are your main drivers.

3) List the top 10 things that over the past 20 years have excited you.

E.g. trips, outings, school projects, sports events. The things that get you excited will also make you successful in your job and will likely be tied to your biggest strengths.

Now get your best friend or your mum to take a look at your answers, ask him or her to help you find common patterns. Once you’ve found those patterns build them into a story, make it snappy. Taaada, that’s your personal brand!
